These 20 Teenagers Are Getting $100,000 Each to Drop Out of School and Become Entrepreneurs

Peter Thiel, famous for being Facebook’s first investor and the co-founder and former CEO at PayPal, is giving 20 teenagers $100,000 to drop out of college.

Here’s the catch: They have to start a company.

During the two-year program, fellows cannot work or be enrolled in school. Instead, they receive mentorship from the Thiel Foundation’s network of tech entrepreneurs, investors, scientists, futurists, and innovators.

In the last two years, Thiel fellows have launched over 30 companies, and raised more than $34 million from outside investors.

“When we created the fellowship more than two years ago, our intention was to help a small number of creative people learn and accomplish more than they might have otherwise,” Thiel said in a statement. “To their great credit, they have exceeded our expectations, and inspired people of all ages by reminding them that qualities like intellectual curiosity, grit, and determination are more important than a degree in determining success in life.”

For some of these young entrepreneurs, it’s not their first company.

Technopark firm launches school management portal

A free-of-cost portal, which promises to support the teaching, communication and evaluation systems in schools, has been launched by a Technopark-incubated firm here on Tuesday.

The firm, Inometrics Technology, said its portal,www.keralavidyalayam.com, was an easy-to-manage website for schools, on which teachers, students and parents could make use of the computer-aided instructional methods. It provided advanced educational technologies integrated with an algorithm to offer guidelines and educational backup. While parents and teachers could use this to evaluate the progress of each student, students could download study material and also contribute to an online school magazine, just to mention a few of the potential usages.

Inometrics CEO Chindukrishna, the portal’s basic version, which was being offered free, had all that was offered by conventional educational management software that were currently available in the market. The paid packages, if schools required more than the conventional, included GPS school bus tracking system, RFID attendance and library management systems, document digitization, live class rooms, online fee payment systems and so on.

Technopark Technology Business Incubator (TBI) Secretary and Registrar K. C. Chandrasekharan Nair, launching the portal here, said plenty of school management systems were available, but Kerala Vidyalayam was the first one offering a free of cost service, which would be of immense help, particularly to government schools. The initiative could in future even link various schools in a district and help get unified updates on the schools in the State for parents, students and teachers.

The portal’s basic version, which is free, has all that is currently available in the market.
